INTRODUCTION TO THE TOWN OF MILLOM

Millom Mining Welcome to a tour that will help you explore some of the many attractions of this undiscovered and uncrowded corner of Cumbria. Rich in heritage and with a wealth of natural beauty, there is much to fascinate and inspire in Millom and its hinterlands.

With a population of approximately 7,500 people in town and the hinterlands, Millom has a history of industry founded on iron-ore mining and steel making in the 1800's. There is little evidence left of the activity that was at one time the largest industrial site of its type in the world. The area, near Hodbarrow, is now an important RSPB nature reserve.

Millom is a wonderful place to spend your holiday if scenery, along with peace and quiet, is your thing. We are family friendly, and have a very low crime rate. The lakes of the Lake District are at our door step. There are trains to and from our station on a reliable basis; however, please be aware that there is no Sunday train service to or from Millom. Also realise that most on-line mapping sites will measure distances as the crow flies, not by actual road distance. Consult the "where we are" map and note Millom's geographic location.

For your vacationing convenience, Millom has an easily located petrol station and public toilet near the train station. Shopping is centrally located-with limited on street parking and completely accessable on foot. A free car park is available next to Tescos. Our town is easily walked by most people, with some of the nicest spots not more than about 8 miles round trip.

We hope you enjoy your time here, and leave feeling refreshed and with a desire to return to this quiet and peaceful place.

Let us show you what we have to offer.
