50 years of unearthing Millom’s past
In just short of 50 years, I have unearthed thousands of items from the Millom area. A fantastic journey, that I have found some great items relating to the history of Millom.
The time line items start from the Mesolithic period 7500 years ago on the Duddon foreshore which were; Human footprints, wild auroch/cow, red deer, roe deer and wild boar footprints. These have appeared due to coastal erosion.
Next are Neolithic flints that I have found when ploughed field walking in the Millom area. The flints date back from around six thousand years ago. Iron Age quern stones were also found by myself and Les Butcher dating back from two and a half thousand years ago that were also discovered in the Millom area.
I started metal detecting 8 years ago and have found a wide range of items in my extensive collection dating from the Roman period, Medieval, Victorian and through to Modern day artefacts.
I have met many interesting people over the years that have helped me and given me helpful and knowledgeable information and advice. The items that I have found belong to the people of Millom and are part of the town’s heritage. Who knows what else there will be to discover and unearth in years to come.
