These days at Silecroft Golf Club
There’s never been a better time to come out to Silecroft and get some healthy exercise, whether it’s a fun kick-about on the Footgolf or a leisurely round of golf. With golf clubs to borrow, a practise range to get you started and 9 holes for just £10 now is the time to do as you always promised yourself and get some gentle exercise amid gorgeous surroundings and breathe in that fresh sea air. We now have a group of stalwart volunteers who’ve got the course in fine condition and we’ve all sorts of deals to suit every pocket. The club has been through some changes in the last three years and has now turned an important corner. Membership is up, the road has been paved at last and more importantly the course is great [especially the greens]. With Neil [Gunga] Robertson joining Ken Leece on a regular basis and everybody keen to get mowing on the new tractor the atmosphere around the place is upbeat and optimism is the mood of these days. Strimmer man ‘Joey Roberts’ keeps the place tidy and the Holmes’s ensure the bunkers are in top nick. A happy bunch and the lunch break craic is mighty.
Among the volunteers is our new Competitions Secretary Peter Clark. You may remember Peter as a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher at Black Combe School or from his days as a stand out rugby player for Haverigg Rugby Union. Pete recently turned 70 and as part of the celebrations got to play St Andrews Old Course and The New Course, a surprise sprung on him by wife Diane whilst they were touring Scotland. It must have been special because he excelled himself there and hasn’t stopped playing well since they returned. So when he teamed up with long time rugby team mate Jon Holmes for the Silecroft Open recently it was game over as they pipped club champion Ed Robertson and legendary local cricketer Ian Swarbrick by one shot to take the honours. So July 2021 will be remembered as the month of Peter Clark. Come on Pete, give the rest a chance!
So why not come and join us. The weather is being kind, your Doctor will tell you it’s good for you and you know it makes sense to be outdoors for the summer. You’ll find a very friendly welcome.
