Not a “diet” – A Healthy Eating Plan making Life Style Changes
Food Optimising is the name given to Slimming World’s super-flexible healthy eating programme. The programme is based on the science of satiety (how filling a food is) and energy density (calories per gram of food), showing slimmer’s that they can easily satisfy their appetite with healthy, filling foods that are naturally low in calories, while still being able to enjoy their favourite treats in moderation without feeling guilty. Members who follow the plan banish hunger and deprivation, the two most common reasons that restrictive diets fail.
Members following Slimming World’s healthy eating plan enjoy a diet of filling and satisfying everyday foods – including fruit, vegetables, eggs, poultry, lean meat, fish, beans, pulses, pasta, rice and potatoes – which can be tailored to suit individual needs, dietry requirements, tastes and budget.
Slimming World has been helping people to lose weight for over 50 years and has become the UK and Ireland’s leading weight-loss organisation with more people choosing to attend a Slimming World group each week than any other weight-loss programme. Groups are run by trained self-employed franchisee Consultants who have lost weight with Slimming World themselves. Slimming World helps members make healthy changes to the way that they, and their family, shop, cook and eat by following the healthy Food Optimising eating plan, based on the liberating concept of Free Food. Slimming World has a deep understanding of the psychological and emotional issues of being overweight. Using a range of powerful techniques, members are provided the tools to lose weight and to adopt new habits and stay slim for life.
The past couple of years have been extremely hard for Slimmers, lockdown was not an easy time for many people, both eating habits & mental health have suffered.
Slimming World, as a company & our consultants throughout the country did carry on working, but through a digital platform instead of our group meetings.
This wasn’t for everyone & we are now back in groups, helping members as we were before the Pandemic. Groups are now fully open without restrictions
Laura, a young working mum of 2 has embraced the Slimming World plan, eating family friendly meals, whilst encouraging her children to start eating healthy for a lifelong sustainable way of living.

Losing weight helps members to reduce their risk of developing heart disease. It can also help reduce high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are both associated with increased risk.
By helping people to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle, Slimming World can dramatically reduce a member’s chances of developing type 2 diabetes and can help members to manage their condition.
All members with diabetes are provided with a booklet Eating well with diabetes – a guide for Slimming World members. This booklet includes information on the healthy eating steps to help manage blood glucose levels, blood fats and regulate weight recommended by Diabetes UK, and explains how Slimming World’s Food Optimising system can help them achieve these steps. All Slimming World Consultants are provided with information on how best to support members who have diabetes. Members are recommended to talk to their diabetes care team about joining Slimming World and their plans to lose weight and become more active. Their care team will be able to offer specialist advice on diet, medication and how to manage blood glucose levels – Food Optimising can be adapted to help members achieve these recommendations.

Slimming World works in partnership with the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) to support pregnant women and breastfeeding mums to manage their weight healthily through pregnancy and beyond. All pregnant/breastfeeding members are provided with a booklet eating well through pregnancy and breastfeeding. The booklet details current recommendations for healthy eating, food safety and activity during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Slimming World is the only national slimming organisation which supports expectant mums through every stage of their pregnancy, from preconception to postnatal. Our aim is not to encourage weight loss or dieting during pregnancy but to support women in eating a healthy diet and prevent excess weight gain. We have an adapted version of our Food Optimising eating plan, especially for pregnant members which encourages plenty of healthy foods like fruit and vegetables, lean meats, poultry and pulses, pasta and potatoes, while encouraging extra portions of certain foods to help support energy needs and a good balance of important nutrients such as calcium and fibre.
Rebeca Carter a local Health Professional is a Slimming World member who has continued attending the Millom Group throughout her pregnancy, and has recently returned after the birth of her beautiful little boy Jack.
